nirvana guitar lessons

I’m a beginner bassist, self-taught. If one eventually wanted to play in a band…?
So, I’m 15. I just got a bass a couple weeks ago. I’ve been learning with tabs. I can play some Radiohead, Nirvana, and Green Day. Pretty easy stuff, obviously. But, anyway, if one wanted to play in a band, would it be ok to just learn with tabs? I’m a pianist and have never even played guitar, so this was quite a departure. Anyway, I can’t afford lessons, so I have no choice but to teach myself. Might I get good enough with practice on my own with tabs? Must one learn how to read the staff as well? (I can b/c of piano, but playing it would be interesting on bass…….) So, thanks in advance for any advice!! ~Indie G
P.S. I realize that it’ll take WORK to get good at this. It took work with piano. I’m up for it. I have no intention of being another mediocre wanna be. I just want to know what’s expected of a bassist in a band/group format. Again, I know it’ll take years. Thanks again!
You can do it!
It’s all in you. Don’t doubt yourself. You have the drive, and that can surpass the importance of decades practicing.
What’s expected from a bass player is to come up with lines that fit, and don’t screw up.
Most bassists practice too much on the second part, so the lines never get very good, just bare minimum.
I was self taught at bass.
I never even learned to read tab very well.
I played saxophone as a kid, but very little of that knowledge was relevant, since bass is a different clef, etc.
Rather, I figured out a few patterns, learned how to tune it, and pretty much learned by ear.
I got my bass when I was 17. By the time I was 18, i was one of the best bass players I knew. This came from 6 hours of daily practice, and studying the hell out of my favorite lines from other players.
I’ve been in several bands, and even subbed for other bass players when they were unable to make a show. Being in bands helps you..be in bands. You gotta get one together asap, cuz it propels your drive and awareness.
My inspiration, Steve Harris, is one of the best living bass players around, and he was self taught. He didn’t just join a band, but created one. He also created one of the most memorable playing styles in rock history…the galloping riffs, melodic rhythms, and running fills.
His exceptionalism does not just come from years of hard work (since he was already writing world-class lines after only a few months of playing) but also from musical drive and creativity. He originally wanted to play drums, but couldn’t afford, and didn’t have room for a proper set. So, he transferred that “rhythm DNA” into his plucking fingers.
After realizing the musical capabilities of the neck part of instrument, the fast rhythms became melodic.
Soon, he was able to envision the whole song before completion. He would bring in the guitarist, and whistle the guitar melody to the guitarist, while he was playing his bass lines. The guitarist would copy that whistled line with his guitar, and a drummer would eventually find a suitable beat.
15 albums later, many of the songs are still made that way.
Never settle for mediocre. Most bass players suck because they want to suck. They just wanted to be in a band without doing any work. So the music sucks because of them.
90% of the crap on the radio could go on without a bass player at all, and nobody would ever notice.

NIRVana
$21.99 Nirvana is the fictional biographical account of a person, nay, a Soul that incarnates in modern day America, and struggles to find himself, before, at last, attaining enlightenment in his old age. The novel begins with Ray Sawol, the main character, sitting on a cumulous cloud overlooking Philadelphia, The City of Brotherly Love, gazing at his parents-to-be making love, and obviously, upset that he's the next luminous Soul to incarnate on earth, the proverbial lion's den. Still in this disincarnate state, Ray eventually prepares for his next incarnation by reviewing past lives that will affect his future life and then he chooses life lessons. Ray lives a so-called ordinary life, but inevitably, he lives in two distinct worlds. He is very much the quintessential seeker and still vaguely remembers why he incarnated and like many, he seeks to tear the veil of life and to go beyond Maya or The Great Illusion. |

Nirvana (USA) - Nirvana
$17.16 Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar); Kris Novoselic (bass); Dave Grohl (drums).Additional personnel: Kera Schaley (cello).IN UTERO was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album."All Apologies" was nominated for 1995 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best Rock Song.Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar); Dave Grohl (vocals, drums); Krist Novoselic (bass).Includes liner notes by David Fricke. All tracks have been digitally remastered.CD contains 1 bonus track."Teenage angst has paid off well," growls Kurt Cobain on IN UTERO`s opening fusilade, "Serve The Servants," suggesting that perhaps success has spoiled Nirvana. Not! IN UTERO is a howling, defiantly punkish recording, an unsentimental throwback to an era of garage band epiphanies and raw, unadorned rock and roll. On IN UTERO, Nirvana rails against both "alternative" conformity and polished notions of commercial rock with the anthemic rage of true outcasts.Engineer-producer Steve Albini has enabled Nirvana to replicate the savage immediacy of their live sound--the sound of a band without commercial aspirations or pretensions, just thrashing away for the sheer joy of noise. Drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic play with heroic power as guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Kurt Cobain overlays their growling beat with shards of broken glass and shattered dreams. On "Scentless Apprentice" each Cobain power chord is tempered by a series of calculated dissonances and melodic fragments, while the singer bares his vulnerability and anger through Nirvana`s familiar soft-hard-soft-hard structures on "Heart Shaped Box" and "Rape Me." Through his crunching guitar and elliptical lyrics on various diseases and recoveries, Cobain lays bare the turmoil and resentments, the physical and mental ailments (self-inflicted and otherwise) that have colored Nirvana`s notoriety. Instead of celebrating their success, Nirvana have fashioned a powerful cautionary tale on IN UTERO, to wit: that fame, acclaim and wealth are not liberating; that music like this cannot be produced on an assembly line, then be used once and tossed on a scrap heap; that life and music was a lot more fun when they were back playing for an audience of nine in some grungy club. IN UTERO is too strong and honest to ignore.A Nirvana best-of that includes a previously unheard song; how much more of a no-brainer could you want? Admittedly, the trio that defined grunge--not to mention its contemporaneous generation of X`ers--wasn`t around long enough to work up that extensive a discography. Still, who wouldn`t relish the opportunity to have some of Nirvana`s greatest tracks together on one disc (yes, completists, even the rarities collection INCESTICIDE ("Sliver") and the pre-fame album BLEACH ("About A Girl") are represented. And of course, such whisper-to-a-scream classics as "Lithium,&q |
