Frank Edwards - Georgia Country Blues *
$16.13 Personnel: Frank Edwards (vocals, guitar, harp); Pop Corn (washboard); Steve Carson (guitar); Washboard Sam (washboard).Liner Note Author: David Nelson (Dahveed Ben Israel).Recording information: Chicago, IL (05/28/1941-??/??/1972); Conyers, GA (05/28/1941-??/??/1972).Editor: Gerhard Wessely.Photographers: James Fraher; Timothy Duffy. The eight sides country bluesman Frank Edwards recorded in Chicago in 1941 for OKeh Records stirred little interest at the time, and the four additional sides he made for Regal Records toward the end of that decade weren`t even officially issued until the 1960s, so the album he recorded for blues researcher Pete Lowry`s Trix Records label in 1972, Done Some Travelin`, was a bit of a revelation in the blues community. Featuring a delightfully wry and ramshackle approach to his material, and singing in a soft, easy, and effortlessly pliant high tenor, Edwards brought a refreshing vitality to the country blues formula, making the album a sort of instant classic of the genre. Done Some Travelin` is reproduced here, minus one instrumental track, and with four of his 1941 OKeh sides added as bonus tracks. It may be difficult to think of the blues as joyous, but that`s exactly how Edwards manages to make it sound on his covers of Sonny Boy Williamson`s "Good Morning, Little School Girl" and Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup`s "Mean Old Frisco" and on his own humorous, shaggy dog tale "Chicken Raid," which details the problems of inviting a preacher to your house for Sunday dinner. The striking "Alcatraz Blues" (which was actually written about Attica State Prison in upstate New York) shows that Edwards had a focused and serious side, as well. Edwards only recorded once more, on March 24, 2002, in Greenville, SC, when he was 93 years old, which resulted in the similarly delightful Chicken Raid album for Music Maker Foundation. He died on his way back to his Atlanta home after the session. One of the last of the great country bluesmen to find an audience, Edwards is a true American original. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Jacintha - Here`s To Ben
$35.62 Personnel: Jacintha (vocals); Teddy Edwards (tenor saxophone); Kei Akagi (piano); Darek Oles (bass); Larance Marable (drums).Includes liner notes by Bill Kohlhaase. All tracks have been digitally remastered using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.Personnel: Jacintha (vocals); Teddy Edwards (tenor saxophone); Kei Akagi (piano); Darek Oles (bass); Larance Marable (drums).Includes liner notes by Bill Kohlhaase. When you link your musical objective to a jazz icon like Ben Webster, certain expectations are created and, as here, rarely are these expectations met. Certainly, Jacintha sings songs Webster played, and she sings them very nicely. But there`s none of the raspy timbre in her voice that made Webster`s saxophone immediately recognizable. Jacintha confuses raspy with singing softly. She and the producers would have been better served by presenting these songs as hers, not Webster`s. The focus then would be where it belongs (i.e., what she does with these classics). With excellent pitch, good diction, and sensitive interpretations of the lyrics, she makes these songs her own. One highlight is her a cappella treatment of "Danny Boy." Throughout the session, Jacintha receives solid support from veteran Teddy Edwards` blues-drenched saxophone (he`s a lot closer to Webster than Jacintha is). He and Jacintha work well together, as on "How Long Has This Been Going On?" The venerable drummer Larance Marable and bass player Darek Oles combine to lay a solid, sensitive foundation for the proceedings. Oles` bass is especially prominent on "Over the Rainbow." Former Miles Davis pianist Kei Akagi is a capable accompanist. This album is a solid enough effort solely on the strength of Jacintha`s natural talent. The obeisance to Webster was not only unnecessary, but distracting. ~ Dave Nathan Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

The Hunting Memoirs of Henry Edwards Davis
$20.03 Henry Edwards Davis (1879a1966) began his hunting adventures as a boy riding in the saddle with his father on foxhunts and deer drives in the company of Confederate cavalry veterans. Born on Hickory Grove Plantation in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, Davis developed his taste for the hunt at an early age. In later years he became a renowned sportsman and expert on sporting firearms. Published here for this first time after a four-decade-long hiatus, his collection of southern hunting tales describes his many experiences in pursuit of turkeys, deer, ducks, and partridges through the fields, forests, and swamps of South Carolinaas Pee Dee region. His memoir offers a lucid firsthand account of a time before paved roads and river-spanning bridges had penetrated the rural stretches of Williamsburg and Florence counties, when hunting was still one of a southerneras chief social activities. With a sportsmanas interest and a historianas curiosity, Davis intersperses his hunting narratives with tales of the regionas rich history, from before the American Revolution to his times in the first half of the twentieth century.pDavis, a connoisseur of fine sporting firearms, also chronicles his personal experiences with a long line of rifles and shotguns, beginning with his first aOld Betsy, a a fourteen-gauge, cap-lock muzzleloader, and later with some of the finest modern American and British shotguns. He describes as well a host of small-bore rifles, many of which he assembled himself, bedding the barrels and actions in hand-carved stocks.pEdited by retired lowcountry game warden Ben McC. MoAse and featuring a foreword by outdoor writer Jim Casada, Davisas memoir is a valuable account of hunting lore and historic firearms, as well as a record of evolving cultural attitudes and economic conditions in post-Reconstruction South Carolina and of the practices that gave rise to modern natural conservation efforts.Tales of pursuing turkeys, deer, ducks, and partridges through @4®záHÿ¾Úx |

Jonathan Edwards (Folk) - Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy
$13.28 Personnel includes: Jonathan Edwards (vocals); Bill Keith (steel guitar, banjo); Stuart Schulman (bass).Recorded in 1972. Originally released on Atco Records. Includes liner notes by Greg Adams. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy -- singer/songwriter Jonathan Edwards` follow-up to his self-titled debut -- was not as much of a commercial success as its predecessor. However, it is just as strong musically and features a few new twists and an increasingly countrified flavor, which Edwards himself attributes to a renewed interest in country & western artists such as George Jones and Merle Haggard. Combined with some tasty down-home contributions from occasional Stray Gator Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar), the somewhat schizophrenic nature of the album may very well have confused those looking and listening for the next "Sunshine" -- which was more akin to the pop radio-friendly acoustic folk sound of America or James Taylor. Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy does have a few pop-oriented moments, however. Primary among them is the opening track, "Stop and Start It All Again," a spry rocker that could easily have fit onto the first album. "It`s a Beautiful Day" likewise continues much in the standard of the first album. Those notable exceptions aside, Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy is more laid-back, with a sound and delivery reminiscent of the well-crafted material on Dillard & Clark`s The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark and Through the Morning, Through the Night. Tracks such as "Everything," "Dues Days Bar," and "Ballad of Upsy Daisy" are noticeably influenced by the concurrently popular Bakersfield sound of artists such as Buck Owens & His Buckeroos. There are a few notable cover tunes included as well. The title track is perhaps best remembered as an early hit for Lefty Frizzell. "Paper Doll" -- which was recorded live at A&R Studios in N.Y.C. -- became a signature tune for the Mills Brothers as far back as the `40s. Folks who enjoyed the Jonathan Edwards disc will also find much to visit and revisit on Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy. ~ Lindsay Planer Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
