3 note per string scales

Last minute audition tips? (string players especially)?
I have an audition in two days, and I think my pieces are pretty decent. What are some good tips to improve my performance on the audition (besides practicing)?
And a related question for string players, how many notes should be played per bow in a 3-octave scale for a high-level highschool orchestra? What’s some ideas on that?
Thanks!
It sounds like you are prepared. They may try and see how you perform under pressure. If someone talks through the audition or hollars….don’t let it get to you…its just a test. Just focus on your music and blank everything else out.

Scales at a Glance
$16.98 In "Scales at a Glance, Setting Music Theory on its Ear," author Clea Saal replaces the traditionally tedious task of memorizing countless scales with an unbelievably simple approach. This system turns even the most complex scale structure into something that can immediately be grasped by a student in his/her first music lesson. Even though this book was written with beginners in mind, its approach will also be an unexpected relief for the more advanced students, since it will allow them to instantly visualize the modes of any scale, and it will provide them with an effective tool to help them understand the structure of all those scales that are foreign to Western tradition, regardless of whether or not they respect the basic twelve half-steps per octave division. In less than 200 pages, this book covers a wide range of topics that includes everything from what a note is to micro-tonal systems. This book requires absolutely no previous knowledge of musical notation. |

Bill Edwards Publishing Fretboard Logic 2 Chords Scales & Arpeggios
$14.95 Armed with a comprehensive understanding of the guitar fretboard from Volume I, Fretboard Logic 2 explores the next area common to all styles of music and all types of guitars: the tone groups. Fretboard Logic Volume II presents the 3 basic tonal elements of music in the context of the fretboard pattern organization of Volume I. The tonal materials available to a musician come from note groupings. Groups of notes that are played simultaneously are termed chords and those that are played consecutively are called scales or modes. The third category consists of a hybrid whereby chords are played like scales, known as arpeggios. Guitar chords, scales, and arpeggios are not music by themselves but are the tonal materials that the musician uses to produce it. With Fretboard Logic 2 you are not forced to memorize thousands of patterns or stuck trying to guess on which string to look for which note as with ordinary methods. Instead, you'll be building your guitar knowledge based on the patterns already mastered in Volume I. This takes years off the learning curve. Fretboard Logic does not dictate any specific style of music, as it presents chords, scales and arpeggios as the one area which all types of music have in common. Volume II represents a full and complete toolbox of these essential musical elements and provides a means of learning them with less effort than ever before. Also the guitar lessons include introductions to theory, technique, style, lead and rhythm playing. |

Mel Bay Rock Curriculum: Fluid Soloing-String Skipping and Wide Interval Soloing (Book/CD)
$17.99 Rock Curriculum: Fluid Soloing, Book 4: String Skipping and Wide Interval Soloing for Guitar is a book with CD authored by Tim Quinn that is a much-needed guitarist's guide to mastering wide interval soloing and includes 212 melodic studies and patterns for guitar. This comprehensive collection of guitar soloing lessons is designed for intermediate guitarists and teaches repeating, continuous motion studies that show how to develop melodic patterns characterized by large intervallic jumps in pitch, from one note to the next, in constant succession. The tutorials in the Rock Curriculum: Fluid Soloing, Book 4 presents four unique approaches to developing wide interval soloing, all of which use string skipping: 1) double pentatonic scales, which are three-note-per-string pentatonic scale patterns; 2) octave sliding, which uses sliding octave shapes in a variety of ways; 3) stacked fifths, which are wide interval shapes derived from pentatonic scales; and 4) wide interval arpeggios derived from the diatonic major scale. The sound that results from these techniques is exciting and unpredictable because it is such a departure from conventional melodic flow, which tends to be scalar, moving stepwise from one note in a scale to the next. By contrast, wide interval guitar soloing is angular and skewed with big skips and sudden directional changes, creating a complex and fascinating sound. All of the studies in the Rock Curriculum: Fluid Soloing, Book 4 instructional book are designed as melodic etudes that can be applied directly to soloing in rock, jazz, fusion, and blues music. These guitar lessons are ideal for serious guitarists in any style who want to break out of typical soloing patterns and create a more explosive, radical sound. CD included. |
