composing music
What does it take to get work composing music for video games/indie films?

I’m not looking to become famous, (that would be nice though) just put food on the table by doing what I most love. I will probably supplement my composing with teaching.

I am planning to get a masters in composition, and possibly a minor dealing with jazz. (maybe a major, who knows)

Networking, Networking, Networking !!!!

Having a great portfolio is probably the best first step you can take, Getting some experience with free, student, or low budget games is the best idea. You shouldn’t turn anything down for the next years to come.

If you are in school, go take a film class or a multimedia class(if they are offered) try to meet the people who are making films and get some experience.

If you don’t live in a big city the you should maybe think about moving to a bugger city. Learn about all the video game companies around( don’t just look at the big one) you might start off a get experience for a little company.

If you want a full time job, Word on sound design, companies usually tend to hire sound designer but most composers a freelancers.

The Degree won’t do much, your portfolio is way more important. Learn to be really good and really fast with computers and computers software.

Composing a World Composing a World
$39.48

Since its original publication, Composing a World by Leta E. Miller and Fredric Lieberman has become the definitive work on the prolific California composer Lou Harrison, often cited as one of America's most original and influential figures. Composing a World presents a compelling and deeply human portrait of an exceptionally beloved pioneer in American music. This paperback edition is an updated version of the highly acclaimed Lou Harrison: Composing a World. The product of extensive research, as well as seventy-five interviews with the composer and those associated with him over half a century, this new edition features an updated works catalog reflecting compositions completed after 1997, adds a brief description of the circumstances of Harrison's death, and corrects a few minor errors. It also includes an annotated works-list detailing more than 300 compositions and a CD featuring over 74 minutes of illustrative Harrison compositions, including several unique and previously unrecorded works. Extending beyond simple biography, Composing a World includes chapters on music and dance, intonation and tuning, instrument building, music criticism, political activism, homosexuality, and Harrison's Asian influences, among other topics. This indispensable study of Harrison's life and works--currently out of print--will be welcomed back by performing artists, students, and scholars of American music.

Composing Interactive Music Composing Interactive Music
$41.98

Interactive music refers to a composition or improvisation in which software interprets live performances to produce music generated or modified by computers. In Composing Interactive Music, Todd Winkler presents both the technical and aesthetic possibilities of this increasingly popular area of computer music. His own numerous compositions have been the laboratory for the research and development that resulted in this book. The author's examples use a graphical programming language called Max. Each example in the text is accompanied by a picture of how it appears on the computer screen. The same examples are included as software on the accompanying CD-ROM, playable on a Macintosh computer with a MIDI keyboard. Although the book is aimed at those interested in writing music and software using Max, the casual reader can learn the basic concepts of interactive composition by just reading the text, without running any software. The book concludes with a discussion of recent multimedia work incorporating projected images and video playback with sound for concert performances and art installations.
Composing with Finale Composing with Finale
$39.99

Finale offers all the notation tools required to craft virtually any composition. Unfortunately, the imaginative ways these tools are used sometimes becomes an elaborate composition in itself! Composing with Finale shows you the essentials you’ll need in order to make the most of this program’s incredible power. Studying Finale from a compositional perspective eases the learning curve overall, transforming Finale into an extension of your imagination. Instead of describing procedures most beneficial to copyists and engravers, this book isolates the methods crucial to working with a composition in progress— how to efficiently translate directly from your mind to the score. Far from a “point-and-click” guide, Composing with Finale will help you compose more music with one of the most advanced music-composition tools on the market.

The English composer William Alwyn was not only one of the most versatile creative figures of his age, writing music for the concert hall, recital room, operatic stage and film screen; he was also a virtuoso instrumentalist and conductor, the teacher of some of the most important composers of the succeeding generation, and the founder of a number of influential music committees such as the Composers` Guild of Great Britain. Alwyn was a gifted writer, too, alive to literature and art - especially pre-Raphaelite painting, on which he was an authority - as well as to music, and Composing in Words presents his most important writings: the autobiographical essay Winged Chariot; the diary, Ariel to Miranda, in which he chronicled the composition of his Third Symphony; an extract from Early Closing, Alwyn`s reminiscences of his Northampton childhood; and essays on film music, and on other composers, among them Elgar, Bax and Puccini.
