Where can a budding play by ear musician find help on the internet?

I am interested in finding trial software that will help me train my ear and teach me to play by ear,especially recognize correct pitch.. I need to try the software because sometimes I have found myself buying products that fail to meet the hype that was used to advertise them. I believe I am getting one thing and I get something that fails to meet my expectations. I need theory too as I write songs. I am willing to spend the money to buy the software later. Music lessons will not do for me as I have gone that route. I am one of those creative persons with a divergent way of learning. Thank you for helping me with suggestions.

Funny that you don’t think lessons will help. I submit that you haven’t found the right teacher (or that you’re not willing to listen to people.) But I admit that everyone is different.

Try checking Berklee School of Music. Many famous musicians came out of there, and they have some good correspondence courses.

Band In The Box is a cool MIDI program, and it comes loaded with lots of tunes (of all styles) that you can jam with. There is also an ear-training section that I find very cool.

Playing along with a CD of your favorite artist is invaluable ear training as well. You have to figure out what he (or she) did, but it also shows you how they work with the chords of the tune rhythmically and harmonically.
