How do you learn strumming patterns? (guitar)?

I am new at playing. I can switch chords fast enough. But I have a hard time strumming right. I play country and contemporary.

Well, I hate to seem like I’m copping out, but strumming is something you learn as you go along. When I was learning to play, I got a handle on learning strumming patterns pretty quickly for the most part. But here’s some advice:

1.) Practice the exercises your teacher gives you.
2.) Always strum from the “bass note” of the chord.
3.) Strum in a manner consistent with the timing of the song. [If that last one throws you, ask your teacher what it means.]
