best way to learn to play guitar

Aside from professional instruction, what is the best/easiest/most effective way to learn to play the guitar?

I would like to learn the basics by the end of the summer, and my preference would be to use a book or a website, but I am especially skeptical of the majority of websites as most are maintained by amateurs. Is there a particular book or website that is very effective? Also, what should I learn/practice first?

How’s this for some basics. The first web page is by a world class guitarist who was one of my professors in college. Most of the sites are by professional guitarists and it should take you at least a year to get through all of this. Even if you don’t want to play in the style of music they teach, the basics are all there.

I went to all of these sites and copied the http address instead of copying them from a text file, to make sure that they were all active on the day that I posted them. These are the same sites I share with my students, and I do not profit in any way from displaying them. Enjoy.
