would it be a good idea to teach yourself how to play the bass guitar?

i’d rather not take lessons because i’ve learned i do better when i go at my own pace but i really don’t know the first thing about instruments. would it be possible for me to learn using books and videos and if so, which ones do you recommend?

i took lessons for a little bit to get the basics down and then went off on my own to pick up my own style of playing
